The Phare de la Pietra, or Fanale di Petra, is a historic lighthouse situated on the small island of L'Île-Rousse in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of France. It was built in 1793, with the aim of guiding ships across the treacherous waters of the surrounding Corsican coastline. Its architecture is classic Mediterranean, with the simple, curvedform of the structure providing a striking silhouette against the clear blue sea. It stands at 31 metres tall, with a guiding light which is visible for up to 20 kilometres on a clear night. A few dozen steps lead down to a small beach or private cove, allowing visitors to relax in a place of untouched beauty. The tiny island is a favourite amongst watersports enthusiasts. Kayak excursions offer visitors the chance to paddle around the rocky shore or explore the nearby uninhabited islets.
