Pfarrkirche St. Johannes Apostel stands in the center of Dernau, a wine-growing village compressed between the Ahr River and steep vineyard slopes in Rhineland-Palatinate. Its tower is one of the settlement’s clearest visual anchors, rising above close-set roofs and giving wider views of Dernau an immediate sense of scale. The church is largely an 18th-century Baroque building, while its tower incorporates older fabric, reflecting the long continuity of the parish. It was heavily affected by the catastrophic Ahr flood of July 2021, adding significance to a site closely connected with the village’s recovery. From surrounding streets and hillside paths, the most distinctive views pair the tower with vineyard terraces and the narrow valley.
