Petrotrin at Point-a-Pierre is the largest oil refinery in the Caribbean. It is situated between Couva and Gasparillo and covers an area of 375 acres. It is operated by the State-owned Petroleum Company of Trinidad and Tobago (Petrotrin) and is the hub of the country’s oil and gas industry. It processes crude oil from off shore oil fields, including some from Venezuela. The refinery processes the crude oil into a variety of petroleum products, including propylene, butane, and ububa gas for generating electricity. It also exports avgas, jet fuel, diesel fuel and asphalt, as well as specialty products like paraffin that is used as a base for candles. Petrotrin also operates a harbour, which serves multiple purposes, including loading and unloading vessels and freight, for the offshore oil rigs, and for Petrotrin stock transportation. The environs of Petrotrin is a great example of industrial synergy in the Caribbean, and it provides a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the Caribbean energy sector.
