Peristil
📍 Croatia
Peristil is the monumental central courtyard of Diocletian’s Palace, embedded in the historic core of Split. Created around the turn of the 4th century, it formed the ceremonial heart of the Roman imperial complex, linking the emperor’s quarters with the mausoleum that later became the Cathedral of Saint Domnius. Colonnades, arches and red granite columns frame the long stone court, while the cathedral bell tower rises sharply above the ancient architecture. Its strong symmetry is softened by worn limestone steps, café seating and the constant flow of city life. From the lower end, the dark entrance to the palace Vestibule creates a striking axial view; from the opposite direction, columns and paving lead the eye toward the bell tower.
