One of the most iconic and picturesque places in Germany is the Brandenburger Tor, its site in the heart of Berlin making for some of the loveliest views of the city's skyline. This neoclassical monument from the 18th century was originally a symbol of the Berlin city gates and the political division during the Cold War, but today is a symbol of unity and peace. The Brandenburger Tor stands tall at 26 metres (85 feet) high and is built from sandstone in the distinctive style of neoclassical German architecture. The gate contains twelve Doric columns, arranged in five rows and crowned by the famous Quadriga statue representing Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, with a chariot and horses. A picturesque walk around the gate provides ample opportunities to admire the magnificent sights of the city landscape. Visitors are also able to catch a glimpse of the nearby Reichstag building and Holocaust Memorial.
