Penella Castle stands tall atop the rugged hills of Cocentaina, Spain, overlooking the valley below. Built in the 9th century, the castle is one of the oldest fortified citadels in the area. Today, the castle grounds are home to a variety of different structures, including a chapel, an artillery tower, an outer wall and two guard houses. The castle also features an inner courtyard with a well and a stairwell leading to the ground floor. Visitors can explore the ruins of the castle and climb the numerous staircases to indulge in stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Penella Castle is colourful in itself, but even more spectacular when the sun sets and the turrets become silhouettes against the cerulean sky.
