Pedraza is a remarkably well-preserved medieval village in Segovia province, Castilla y León, prized for its intact stone walls, narrow cobbled streets and bundled group of noble houses that make it a living example of Spain’s feudal past. Its compact Plaza Mayor, framed by traditional arcaded facades and the 16th–17th-century castle keep, concentrates the village’s social and architectural identity: a fortified noble seat (Castillo de Pedraza) and surrounding manor houses testify to its role as a rural lordship. The fortified layout, defensive towers and rustic masonry give a clear sense of medieval urban planning and rural aristocratic life.
Historical relevance centers on its evolution from a 13th-century fortified settlement to a quiet aristocratic town, with later Renaissance alterations visible in palaces and the castle’s chapel. Unique cultural features include La Noche de las Velas (Night of the Candles), when the whole village is illuminated by thousands of candles for one summer evening, and regular classical music and film events that exploit the intimate Plaza Mayor and castle as venues. The village’s small bullring and local gastronomy, anchored in lamb and castilian recipes, reflect regional traditions specific to Pedraza’s communal identity.
