Patio de la Sala del Mexuar
📍 Spain
The Patio de la Sala del Mexuar is a compact, intimate courtyard within the Nasrid Palaces of the Alhambra in Granada, functioning as the outdoor annex to the Sala del Mexuar (the council and reception chamber). It is important as a physical and ceremonial threshold between public administrative space and the more private palatial apartments, illustrating how Nasrid court ritual and governance were articulated in architecture. Originating in the 13th–14th centuries, the Mexuar’s layout and decoration reflect the Emirate of Granada’s blend of Andalusi Islamic courtly traditions and pragmatic civic functions.

Architecturally the patio is defined by a rectangular water basin and low-splayed arcades supported on slender columns with horseshoe and lobed arches; walls bear carved stucco friezes with geometric and epigraphic motifs and remnants of polychrome tilework. The adjoining Sala del Mexuar displays a richly painted wooden ceiling (artesonado) and intricate plasterwork, underscoring how modest exterior courtyards contrasted with highly ornate interior chambers. Unique to this space is its role as the transitional setting for official audiences and petitions, and its relatively secluded, contemplative scale within the larger palace sequence. Access is only via the Alhambra/Nasrid Palaces route and governed by the timed-entry ticket system for the Nasrid circuit.
