Parroquia Santiago Apostol
📍 Mexico
Parroquia Santiago Apostol in Santiago, Mexico, is the second oldest parish in the state of Jalisco, and can trace its origins back to the mid-1700s. It is a remarkable example of the dominant architectural style in Mexico at that time, combining Baroque and Neoclassic elements. It features two impressive spired towers, two side entrances and a magnificent altar with gold accents. Inside, the grand nave is lined with real silver-leafed altars, and the dome painted with beautiful frescos depicting religious scenes. Other notable features are the chapel of the joyful mysteries, the Neo-Gothic chapel of the sorrowful mysteries, and the crypt where the remains of prominent citizens of Santiago are interred. Visitors to the site can also appreciate its religious artifacts, such as the gold crucifix from the 16th century, as well as the collection of paintings with works that span from the 17th century to present-day. The site is not only a religious one, as it is also home to a popular music and art school.
