The Parròquia de Sant Bertomeu is Xàbia’s principal parish church, anchoring the Plaça de l’Església in the historic centre, inland from the port. Built largely in the 16th century in the Valencian Gothic tradition, it combines a place of worship with the defensive character of a fortress, reflecting the threat of seaborne raids along this coast. Massive walls, buttresses and battlements contrast with the finer carving around its portals. The church’s warm, honey-coloured tosca sandstone is a defining material of Xàbia’s traditional architecture; its weathered surfaces give the façade much of its visual character. The square bell tower rises above the surrounding old-town buildings, while inside, ribbed vaults reveal the Gothic structure behind the austere exterior.
