📍 From Inside, Australia
Victoria’s Parliament House stands on Spring Street in East Melbourne, at the eastern edge of the city centre, facing down Bourke Street. Construction began in 1855, and the building developed in stages into the grand classical landmark seen today; a proposed dome was never built. Its broad staircase, fluted Corinthian columns and deep portico give the street-facing façade a strong rhythm of stone, light and shadow. The elevated entrance also places it prominently at the end of the view along Bourke Street, linking its monumental architecture to Melbourne’s city grid. Inside, the Legislative Assembly’s green furnishings contrast with the Legislative Council’s red and gold decoration, reflecting the traditions of the two parliamentary chambers. Beyond its role as the seat of Victoria’s legislature, the building housed Australia’s federal Parliament from 1901 to 1927, before the national government moved to Canberra.
