📍 From South Bank Lion, United Kingdom
The Palace of Westminster stands on the north bank of the Thames as the meeting place of the UK Parliament. Its richly detailed Gothic Revival exterior was created after a fire destroyed much of the earlier palace in 1834, with Charles Barry shaping the overall design and Augustus Pugin contributing its Gothic character. “Big Ben” properly names the great bell inside Elizabeth Tower, though the nickname is widely used for the tower and clock. From Westminster Bridge or the opposite riverbank, the tower anchors a distinctive composition of pinnacles, clock faces and the long parliamentary façade; calm water can add reflections, while evening illumination emphasizes the warm stonework against the river and sky.
