📍 Brazil
Paranapiacaba is a historic railway village in the municipality of Santo André, on the forested heights of the Serra do Mar southeast of São Paulo. It developed around the British-owned São Paulo Railway, which connected the coffee-producing interior with the port of Santos. Planned streets, timber workers’ houses, railway workshops and a prominent clock tower preserve the character of a 19th-century industrial settlement shaped by British engineering. The tracks divide the lower railway quarter from the hillside settlement above, giving wider views a distinctive arrangement of roofs, rails and green slopes. Dense Atlantic Forest surrounds the village, while frequent mountain fog softens the outlines of its wooden buildings and railway machinery.
