The Parthenon crowns the Acropolis, the limestone citadel rising above central Athens and anchoring the city’s skyline. Built in the 5th century BCE from Pentelic marble, the Doric temple honored Athena, patron goddess of ancient Athens, and embodied the civic confidence of the city at its classical height. Its disciplined colonnade incorporates subtle optical refinements, including gently curved horizontal lines and columns that lean slightly inward, giving the structure visual balance rather than rigid geometry. Centuries of use as a temple, church, and mosque, followed by severe damage during a 1687 bombardment, are written into its surviving fabric. From nearby Acropolis paths, the columns create shifting layers of light and shadow, while the pale marble often takes on warmer tones late in the day.
