Pão de Açúcar
📍 From Mirante Dona Marta, Brazil
Pão de Açúcar, or Sugarloaf Mountain, rises 396 meters at the entrance to Guanabara Bay, beside Rio de Janeiro’s Urca neighborhood. Its rounded summit and steep rock faces form one of the city’s most recognizable silhouettes, contrasting with the water, wooded slopes and dense urban shoreline. The name refers to its resemblance to the molded loaves in which refined sugar was once sold, linking the landmark to Brazil’s sugar-trading history. A two-stage cable-car route climbs from Praia Vermelha via Morro da Urca to the summit, with suspended cabins adding a distinctive element to views of the mountain. From above, Botafogo’s curved waterfront, the bay’s islands and Corcovado crowned by Christ the Redeemer show how closely Rio’s neighborhoods fit between mountains and sea.
