Panamá City, the capital of Panama, spreads along the Bay of Panama near the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal. Its most distinctive feature is the sharp visual contrast between the glass towers of the modern financial district and Casco Antiguo, the historic quarter of plazas, church façades, balconies, and tiled roofs. Farther east, the stone ruins of Panamá Viejo mark the original colonial settlement, abandoned after its destruction in the 17th century. Waterfront views emphasize the city’s geography: a dense skyline framed by tropical vegetation, broad tidal flats, and ships waiting offshore to enter one of the world’s most important maritime routes.
