Palm House
📍 From Inside, United Kingdom
The Palm House at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in Richmond upon Thames, is a Victorian glasshouse built to cultivate tropical plants. Completed in 1848 and designed by Decimus Burton with iron-founder Richard Turner, it combines a wrought-iron skeleton with curved glazing, drawing on techniques used in shipbuilding. Its tall central section accommodates palms, while lower wings extend symmetrically on either side. Inside, dense foliage and broad leaves contrast with the repeating iron ribs overhead, making the structure’s scale especially apparent. From across Palm House Pond, the building’s rounded silhouette and reflections provide a contrasting view: an ordered piece of Victorian engineering enclosing a lush tropical environment.
