Palazzo Soranzo Van Axel
📍 Italy
Palazzo Soranzo Van Axel is a late-Gothic palace in Venice’s Cannaregio district, overlooking the meeting of Rio de la Panada and Rio de Ca’ Widmann, near the church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli. Built in the late fifteenth century, it takes its name from the Venetian Soranzo family and the Van Axel family, merchants of Flemish origin who later owned it. Its brick façades are distinguished by pale stone detailing and groups of pointed-arch windows, characteristic of Venetian Gothic domestic architecture. The canal-corner setting brings two elevations into a single view, revealing how the palace fits into Venice’s dense waterside fabric; reflections below contrast with the crisp window tracery and weathered masonry above.
