Palazzo dei Priori is Fermo’s historic civic palace, commanding one side of the elongated Piazza del Popolo in the old town. Formed from medieval buildings and later reshaped with a Renaissance façade, it is instantly recognizable by its broad staircase, arcaded entrance and the central bronze statue of Pope Sixtus V, who served as bishop of Fermo before his papacy. Inside are the civic art collections, including Rubens’s dramatic Adoration of the Shepherds, and the Sala del Mappamondo, named for its monumental early-18th-century globe and lined with historic books. From the square, the palace’s balanced façade, warm brickwork and pale stone details create a strong frontal composition, while the surrounding arcades emphasize the ceremonial scale of Fermo’s civic center.
