Palazzo dei Consoli is Gubbio’s 14th-century civic palace, rising above Piazza Grande on the slopes of Mount Ingino. Built to house the medieval town’s government, its imposing stone façade, battlements and bell tower express the authority of the independent commune. A broad exterior staircase leads to the main entrance, while rows of arched windows punctuate the otherwise solid walls. The palace now houses the civic museum, whose key treasures include the Iguvine Tablets: seven bronze tablets bearing inscriptions in the ancient Umbrian language, recording religious rites. Piazza Grande’s elevated, open terrace makes the building’s scale especially striking and places it against views of Gubbio’s tiled roofs and the valley below.
