Palazzo dei Consoli dominates Piazza Grande, the elevated civic heart of medieval Gubbio in Umbria. Built in the 14th century as the seat of the city’s magistrates, it is a commanding example of Gothic civic architecture, with a pale limestone façade, crenellated roofline, tall bell tower, mullioned windows, and a broad staircase rising from the square. The palace now houses Gubbio’s Civic Museum, whose most important objects are the seven bronze Iguvine Tablets, an exceptional record of the ancient Umbrian language and pre-Roman religious rites. From the vast, sharply defined piazza, the palace’s vertical lines contrast with sweeping views over Gubbio’s terracotta roofs and the surrounding Apennine landscape; changing light brings out the texture and warm-gray tones of the stone.
