Palazzo dei Consoli dominates Piazza Grande, the monumental civic heart of Gubbio’s steep medieval center in Umbria. Built in the 14th century as the seat of the city’s magistrates, its pale limestone façade, pointed portal, mullioned windows, crenellated roofline, and slender bell tower express the authority of an independent commune. The palace now houses the Civic Museum, whose most significant objects are the Eugubine Tablets, seven bronze inscriptions that preserve an exceptional record of the ancient Umbrian language and religious rites. From the elevated square, the severe geometry of the palace contrasts with the layered terracotta roofs below and the surrounding Apennine landscape; the broad staircase and sharply rising façade give photographs a powerful sense of scale and symmetry.
