Palazzo D'Avalos ex Carcere is an imposing structure located on the island of Procida near Naples, Italy. Built in the fifteenth century, the castle was used as a prison until after the World War II. The building is a great example of the clash between the utilitarian and the military in Italian architecture. The ex carcere is located on the southwestern edge of the island and overlooks an expansive view of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Today, the former prison is used as a conference and events center. There are also high quality restaurants that offer stunning views of the ocean. Nearby, visitors can explore Mount Epomeo and the Santa Maria di Procida Basilica, which is a baroque style church built between 1606 and 1620. Visitors can also take a ferry to Ischia or discover the trails and beaches of the island.
