Palazzo Carafa o delle Paolotte is a historic urban palace in the Baroque heart of Lecce, set among the narrow streets of the centro storico. Its façade is carved from the local pietra leccese and attracts the eye with richly worked window frames, cornices and balconied openings that demonstrate the city’s exuberant stone-carving tradition. Photographically, the warm honeyed tones of the stone respond strongly to low-angle sunlight, bringing out deep relief in floral and figurative carving; shooting from the approaching street or a slight low angle emphasizes the layered balconies, wrought-iron railings and the textured surface that make the building read as both sculpture and architecture.
