The Palais des Ducs et des États de Bourgogne anchors Place de la Libération in Dijon’s historic center. Once the seat of the powerful dukes of Burgundy, the complex blends medieval remains, including the Tour de Bar and Tour Philippe le Bon, with an imposing classical façade created as the palace evolved into the meeting place of Burgundy’s provincial estates. It now houses Dijon’s city hall and the Musée des Beaux-Arts, whose collections include the richly sculpted tombs of Philip the Bold and John the Fearless. From the square, the palace’s long symmetrical frontage, pale stone, central tower, and curved surrounding colonnades form one of Dijon’s most recognizable urban compositions; fountains and wet paving can add reflections, while the tower provides a high view across the city’s tiled roofs.
