Palafitos del Barrio Gamboa line the tidal edge of Castro, the capital of Chile’s Chiloé Province. These timber houses stand on wooden piles, reflecting a traditional way of building that connected daily life to the archipelago’s waterways: entrances faced the street, while the water side provided access for small boats. Their brightly painted façades, pitched roofs, and irregular stilts form one of Castro’s most recognizable scenes. The tide continually reshapes the composition—high water brings reflections beneath the houses, while low tide exposes the long supports and muddy estuary, revealing the practical structure behind the picturesque waterfront.
