Palácio dos Marqueses de Fronteira is a 17th-century aristocratic residence in Benfica, on Lisbon’s northwestern side, near Monsanto Forest Park. Built as a country retreat, it remains a family residence and is distinguished by azulejos covering rooms, garden walls and terraces. In the Hall of Battles, tile panels depict episodes of the Portuguese Restoration War, linking the palace to the recovery of Portuguese independence from Spain. Outside, formal gardens combine clipped hedges, fountains, statuary and a large ornamental pool beneath the Gallery of Kings, lined with busts of Portuguese monarchs. Glazed tiles, pink façades and greenery give the grounds a distinctive palette, while reflections in the pool emphasize the garden’s layered architecture. The contrast between orderly planting and richly detailed tile scenes rewards both wide compositions and close studies. Visits to the palace interiors are guided.
