Palácio dos Marqueses de Fronteira is a 17th-century aristocratic residence in Lisbon’s São Domingos de Benfica district, beside Monsanto Forest Park. Built as a country retreat for the first Marquis of Fronteira, it is distinguished by extensive azulejo tilework extending from its interiors into the gardens. In the Battles Room, tiled panels depict episodes of the Portuguese Restoration War, linking the decoration to the struggle for independence from Spain. Outside, formal gardens combine clipped hedges, fountains and tiled terraces. The Gallery of Kings, lined with busts of Portuguese monarchs, overlooks a large pool whose reflections echo the architecture and tilework. Blue-and-white and multicoloured panels contrast with the surrounding greenery, rewarding close attention as well as wider views of the garden’s geometry. The palace remains privately owned, and visits to its interiors are guided.
