The Palacio de la Asamblea is Melilla’s city hall and the seat of its autonomous assembly, occupying a prominent position on Plaza de España between the historic fortified quarter and the modern city. Designed by Enrique Nieto, the architect responsible for many of Melilla’s most distinctive buildings, it is a major civic expression of Art Deco architecture. Its pale, symmetrical façade, central entrance, clock, and paired corner towers give the building a monumental presence, while palms and the broad circular plaza provide a strong foreground for photographs. The palace is especially recognizable in wider views that show how its formal geometry anchors one of Melilla’s principal urban spaces.
