Palacio de Carlos V stands within Granada’s Alhambra complex, where its monumental Renaissance design contrasts sharply with the intricate Nasrid palaces nearby. Commissioned by Emperor Charles V in the 16th century and designed by Pedro Machuca, the building is defined by a severe square exterior enclosing an unexpected circular, two-level colonnaded courtyard. This geometric transition creates one of the Alhambra’s most recognizable architectural scenes: concentric stone arcades, deep shadows and changing bands of sunlight emphasize its symmetry and scale. The palace now houses the Alhambra Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts of Granada, linking the imperial structure with collections devoted to Andalusi culture and Spanish art.
