The Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius is the restored political and ceremonial heart of the Grand Duchy, rebuilt on the medieval site adjacent to Gediminas Hill and Vilnius Cathedral. It functions as a museum and cultural complex that interprets Lithuania’s statehood from the late Middle Ages through the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth: coronations, diplomatic receptions and the chancellery of powerful rulers such as Gediminas’ successors took place here, making it a symbol of Lithuanian sovereignty and identity. Archaeological layers uncovered during reconstruction revealed earlier masonry, Gothic cellars and Renaissance additions; the present building (completed 2013) combines historically informed restorations with contemporary exhibition architecture, featuring recreated Gothic and Renaissance halls, a vaulted dugout basement and a glass-roofed courtyard that exposes preserved foundations. Architectural highlights include the Great Ducal Hall, banquet chambers with period-inspired polychrome decoration, and a multimedia exhibition that links artifacts to political events like the Union of Lublin. Unique to this site are on-site archaeological displays, living-history events and state ceremonial reenactments tied to national holidays, plus rotating temporary exhibitions focused on dynastic material culture and diplomatic history.
