The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence of the British Monarch in Scotland, located at the bottom of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. It was built in the 16th century as a royal abbey. The royal palace contains many notable collections of art, historical furniture, and royal artifacts. Some of the most popular sights include the royal apartments, which contain artistry from the 16th to 19th centuries, as well as the Throne Room and Great Gallery, created during the reign of Charles II. The Royal Staircase, an impressive feat of craftsmanship, commands a visit. On the palace grounds is the ruined Holyrood Abbey. Dating back to 1128, the abbey is said to be one of Scotland’s earliest foundation stories linked to national identity. The palace is normally open to the public for sightseeing, although occasionally the Queen uses it for official and private functions.
