Padrão dos Descobrimentos is a monumental riverside memorial in Belém, Lisboa, celebrating Portugal’s 15th–16th century Age of Discoveries. Shaped like a stylised caravel’s prow thrusting into the Tagus, the monument commemorates the navigators, patrons and thinkers who expanded Portuguese maritime exploration; at its tip stands Prince Henry the Navigator, flanked by 33 larger-than-life statues of explorers, cartographers, missionaries, nobles and artists.

Conceived for the 1940 Portuguese World Exhibition and rebuilt in concrete between 1958–1960, it was designed by architect Cottinelli Telmo with sculptural work led by Leopoldo de Almeida. Architectural emphasis is theatrical and linear, evoking movement and national myth through a stepped, ship-like silhouette and high-relief figures that read clearly from the riverfront. Unique site features include the vast compass rose and world map set in patterned stone on the plaza—depicting landing points and routes—and an internal elevator that mounts to a rooftop observation terrace offering sweeping views of the Belém riverside, Jerónimos Monastery, and the 25 de Abril Bridge. The monument’s base contains exhibition space with models and period maps, tying visual drama to curated historical context.
