Ouro Preto is a historic city in the mountains of Minas Gerais, shaped by the region’s 18th-century gold boom and formerly known as Vila Rica. Its UNESCO-listed center preserves steep cobbled streets, whitewashed colonial houses with brightly painted trim, red-tiled roofs, ornate Baroque churches, and works associated with the sculptor Aleijadinho. The city also holds a central place in the story of the Inconfidência Mineira, an early movement against Portuguese colonial rule. From its sloping streets and hillside viewpoints, church towers rise at different levels across a densely layered roofscape, often framed by green mountains. The sharp changes in elevation create striking shifts in scale and perspective, though the polished, uneven paving rewards careful walking.
