The Our Lady of Chartres Cathedral is a beautiful, medieval church located in Chartres, France. It was constructed from 1194 to 1220 and is renowned for its stunning stained-glass windows and ornate sculptures. Inside the church are three levels of galleries, including the Royal Gallery, the High and Upper Galleries, and the Chariot Gallery. In addition to these architectural details, the church has a renowned collection of relics including the Sancta Camisa, a sacred relic believed to be the shirt worn by the Virgin Mary when she gave birth to Jesus Christ. The various sculptures and stained-glass windows show scenes from the Bible and give visitors a glimpse into the religious history of the church. Visitors will also find a wealth of historical art and statues throughout the cathedral, such as the Virgin and Child by Italian sculptor Giovanni Pisano. While visiting, take some time to explore the adjacent garden, which houses the crypt of Saint-Aignan, the Bishop of Chartres.
