📍 Canada
The Othello Tunnels are a series of former railway tunnels and bridges in Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park, just outside Hope, British Columbia. Built for the Kettle Valley Railway in the early 20th century, they carried trains through a narrow granite gorge carved by the Coquihalla River. Their name reflects railway engineer Andrew McCulloch’s use of Shakespearean characters for stations along the route. Aligned tunnel openings create a strong receding perspective, with dark interiors framing patches of forest and daylight. Between the tunnels, bridges reveal the river squeezed beneath steep rock walls, making the contrast between the railway’s straight alignment and the canyon’s rugged contours central to the scene.
