📍 From Schillerplatz, Germany
Osteiner Hof is an elegant Baroque palace on Schillerplatz, one of the central public spaces in Mainz’s old city. Built in the mid-18th century as a residence for Franz Wolfgang Damian von Ostein, brother of the city’s prince-elector, it reflects the courtly architecture that shaped Mainz before the French Revolutionary era. Its long, pale façade is organized around a richly decorated central projection, with sculptural details and a prominent balcony providing a formal focus. That balcony also connects the building to Mainz’s famous carnival culture: each year on 11 November, the new Fastnacht season is proclaimed here. From Schillerplatz, the palace can be photographed in context with the square’s trees, historic façades and the nearby Fastnachtsbrunnen, whose crowded bronze figures create a lively contrast with the building’s symmetry.
