Oriente Station sits in Lisbon’s Parque das Nações as a major rail, metro and bus interchange serving regional, national and international routes. Designed by architect Santiago Calatrava for Expo ’98, its long, vaulted concourse of white steel ribs and glass feels like a modern cathedral: repeating arches create strong linear perspective and dramatic shadows, while the glazed roof floods the space with diffuse light. Photographers are drawn to the symmetry and rhythm of columns, reflections on wet pavement and the contrast between the station’s bright structural geometry and the adjacent riverside development. The station’s scale and clear sightlines make it easy to frame converging lines from end-to-end or capture passengers moving through the bays.
