Orford Castle
📍 United Kingdom
Orford Castle is a Norman castle in Orford, Suffolk, England. It was built by Henry II of England between 1165 and 1173 to defend his kingdom from an invasion by the French. The 12th-century castle is one of the most impressive examples of Norman architecture in England, and is particularly well-preserved. The castle consists of a large keep, surrounded by six corner towers and an outer wall, which was surrounded by a wide, dry moat. Inside the walls, there is a variety of structures, including a great hall, chapel, stable block, and kitchen. The castle is open to visitors, and can be explored either on foot or on audio-visual tours. It is possible to climb up to the top of the keep - the highest point of the castle - and view the surrounding landscape. There are also special demonstrations, activities, and events at the castle.
