Oppstemten
📍 Norway
Oppstemten is a steep stone staircase climbing from the Montana area toward Mount Ulriken, the 643-metre-high summit above Bergen. Built by Nepalese Sherpa stoneworkers, its roughly 1,300 steps turn a demanding mountain ascent into a striking ribbon of fitted rock across the slope. As the staircase rises, views open westward over Bergen’s compact centre, surrounding mountains, fjords and islands. The repeating steps create strong leading lines, while exposed bedrock, low vegetation and shifting coastal weather give the route a distinctly western Norwegian character. Conditions can become slippery in rain, snow or ice.
