📍 New Zealand
The One Tree Hill Monument crowns Maungakiekie, a volcanic cone rising above Auckland’s central isthmus and the surrounding lawns of Cornwall Park. The stone obelisk, accompanied by a bronze Māori figure, was commissioned through the legacy of Sir John Logan Campbell as a memorial to Māori; Campbell’s grave lies beside it. Long before the monument, Maungakiekie was an important fortified Māori settlement, and its slopes still reveal terraces shaped by generations of occupation. From the summit, the monument forms a stark vertical landmark against broad views of the city, Rangitoto, and Auckland’s two harbours, while low light emphasizes the cone’s contours and earthworks. The maunga is culturally significant and archaeologically sensitive, so visitors should remain on formed paths and respect protected areas.
