📍 Poland
Olsztyn Castle is a Gothic stronghold of the Warmian Cathedral Chapter, standing beside the Łyna River at the edge of Olsztyn’s Old Town. Built in the 14th century, it combined defensive functions with the administration of the chapter’s estates. Nicolaus Copernicus lived and worked here as an administrator; an astronomical chart he drew on a wall of the courtyard gallery survives as a tangible link to his observations of the Sun. The castle now houses the Museum of Warmia and Masuria, placing its medieval fabric alongside the region’s history and culture. Red-brick walls, steep tiled roofs and a cylindrical defensive tower give the exterior its recognizable silhouette, while the enclosed courtyard reveals the contrast between fortified outer walls and the galleries of a working residence.
