📍 United Kingdom
Old Sarum Cathedral survives as low stone foundations within the earthworks of Old Sarum, the hilltop settlement just north of modern Salisbury. This Norman cathedral stood beside a royal castle on a site fortified since the Iron Age, bringing religious and military power into the same enclosure. In the early 13th century, the cathedral community relocated to the valley below, where the present Salisbury Cathedral and the new city developed. The remaining foundations outline the vanished church’s nave, transepts and eastern end, creating a striking geometric pattern across the grass. Seen from the higher castle earthworks, the cathedral’s footprint sits against sweeping ramparts and open Wiltshire countryside, revealing the scale of a religious centre that has largely disappeared.
