Mellifont Abbey is one of Ireland's most important ecclesiastical monuments and dates back to 1142. It was the first Cistercian abbey to be established in Ireland. Located in the village of Mellifont in County Louth, the complex is a fine example of the French Gothic style andconsists of surviving ruins and remains of a governor's house, a statue of St Patrick and a picturesque old Parish Church. Visitors to the site can explore the ruined cloister, the restored north transept, and other monuments on the grounds. The abbey is surrounded by parkland and provides a beautiful setting for walks and photography. There are plenty of signage along the paths to provide information about the history of the region, which makes for an interesting and informative visit.
