Old Mellifont Abbey is located in County Louth, Ireland, and it was founded in 1142 as the very first Cistercian abbey in Ireland. This monument is a spectacular example of medieval architecture, with many decorative stone carvings, cloisters and other features to explore. After coming under the ownership of Benedictine monks in 1587, this abbey became a huge tourist attraction, and to this day it houses some of the oldest Christian artifacts in all of Ireland. Visiting tourists can marvel at the Romanesque archways, the old stone lilly pools, and stunning views of the River Mattock. Visitors are welcome to explore the grounds and its features. A must-see for any history buff.
