📍 From Inside, Australia
Old Melbourne Gaol is a preserved 19th-century prison complex on Russell Street, at the northern edge of Melbourne’s central business district. Built from dark local bluestone and closed as a prison in 1929, it reflects the severe design and penal practices of colonial Victoria. Bushranger Ned Kelly was imprisoned and executed here in 1880, and the museum places his story within the wider history of inmates, punishment and capital sentencing. Inside, narrow galleries rise between tiers of iron-fronted cells, creating strong symmetry and a stark sense of confinement; subdued light emphasizes the worn stone, heavy doors and institutional scale. The surviving cell block forms part of a broader historic justice precinct that also includes the former City Watch House and Magistrates’ Court.
