📍 Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Old Bridge in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a stunning example of Ottoman architecture and a symbol of the city's cultural heritage. Spanning the Neretva River, the bridge was originally constructed in 1566 by the renowned architect Mimar Hayruddin under the commission of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Its elegant arch and limestone structure have made it a masterpiece of engineering and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005. The bridge was tragically destroyed during the Bosnian War in 1993 but was meticulously reconstructed using original techniques and materials, reopening in 2004. Visitors can enjoy the annual diving competition where locals leap from the bridge into the river below, reflecting a centuries-old tradition.
