Mostar’s iconic Old Bridge is a UNESCO World Heritage site, located in a city founded in the 15th century by Ottomans. Spanning the Neretva River, the bridge was originally built in the 16th century and was destroyed in 1993 during the conflict in Bosnia-Herzegovina. It was reconstructed and reopened in 2004. The bridge is a sight to behold with an iconic arch connecting two parts of the city. It is most beautiful at sunset when the golden light reflects off the river. Visitors can walk the bridge and there are steps on either side providing its signature arc with wonderful views. It is important to be aware of the traffic when crossing the bridge as it is still in use. You should also check out the Ottoman-era Turkish Houses in the Old Town, as well as any of the many mosques. Be sure to give a few konverta (local coins) to the divers daring enough to take the plunge from the bridge!
