Old Bagan is the historic core of the wider Bagan Archaeological Zone, spread across a dry plain beside the Ayeyarwady River in central Myanmar. From the 11th to 13th centuries, the capital of the Pagan Kingdom became a major center of Theravada Buddhism, leaving thousands of surviving temples, stupas, and monasteries within the UNESCO-listed Bagan Cultural Landscape. Its recognizable views layer russet brick monuments, gilded spires, palms, and scrub beneath a broad, hazy sky; carved stucco, weathered masonry, and surviving interior murals reward closer framing. Many pagodas remain active sacred sites, so visitors should remove shoes and socks, dress respectfully, and observe restrictions on climbing monuments.
