Okunoin is an ancient Buddhist temple site located in the remote mountain forest on Kōya-san mountain range in Wakayama, Japan. It is the largest cemetery in Japan and is one of the most sacred and visited places in this country. The deep forest is full of passionate religious atmosphere, fragrant incense, tall lanterns, and many moss-covered graves. Here you will find buildings such as Kane-iwa-jō, a mausoleum tower from the Heian period as well as the mummified body of Kūkai, a renowned Buddhist priest. Visitors from all over the world come to Okunoin to burn incense and pray. The temple has a special natural bamboo forest and an amazing view of the surrounding mountains.
